Omnisphere is pretty decent for sound design because it allows you to work from shallow to deep. It was almost 10 000 patches and lots of those patches are extremely playable as omnisphere has always focussed towards servicing keyboard players.
A soundsource can be hundreds of samples by the way. First of all Omnisphere 2.0 comes with a MASSIVE database of samples spread over 5,439 soundsources. You can't really compare Omnisphere and Serum. I would say that competition (Halion, Falcon) is better, if you are not looking exclusively for a big number of presets. Wavetable engine has hardsync and symmetry transforms.Users can't also import multi-samples, so they only Spectrasonics can create detailed soundbanks for it. Harmonia (That's not a synthesis method, it copies oscillators at various intervals for fatter sound)Īnd all these are implemented more as sound effects, not as legitimate synthesis methods, because the controls are not deep at all (compared to real, dedicated synths). It has samples and wavetables and (from their site): Not really, because the implementation is below any dedicated synth (or other hybrid synths ).And it doesn't have additive synthesis ("harmonic"?) Omnisphere in and by itself is a lot more powerful than Serum, because it supports pretty much all types of synthesis (wavetable, subtractive, harmonic, FM, granular and more). Also, Steve Duda (the guy who created Serum) is probably one of the coolest dudes in the DSP world, and offers fantastic support for Serum ) overwhelming, while Serum is still one of the easiest to learn and use synths out there (only recently, in my opinion, the first synths came out that has better visual feedback: Arturia Pigments).Īlso considering that Serum is one of the most used synths, especially in progressive house, you can't really go wrong with it.
However, if you are not planning on really digging into sound design, Omnisphere is just. It also comes with a lot more presets out of the box (around 14.000, seriously), has more effects to chose from, has more layers to utilise and much more. There are different ways to approach this, but to give a simple, quick answer: Serum probably is the way to go, simply because there are much more resources available (in terms of soundsets, tutorials etc.).
